Top 10 Back to School Must Haves

We are talking Back to School this week! Yesterday we talked about how our family gears up for Back to School craziness. Today I am linking up with my friend Erin at Perfectly Port Family to list our Top 10 Back to School Must Haves. As I said yesterday, I only have one kid in preschool so my version of Must Haves may not be the same for a more seasoned school mom but it holds true for our house.

Backpack

Yesterday I talked about Hank’s backpack from Pottery Barn that we LOVE! I know that everyone and their mother purchases the PBK backpacks but there is good reason. They hold up phenomenally. Hank only had school twice a week last year and his backpack is in practically brand new condition so we will be reusing it again this year. I hope the quality withstands the rougher kids years where I know bags take a beating because I’d like to buy these for years to come.

New Shoes

Did anyone else’s kid’s feet grow an insane amount this summer?! Hank feet shot up three sizes in the blink of an eye. I grabbed some sneakers for him at the Under Armour store the other day (Laces! No more velcro for this kid!) and I still need to get a nice brown pair and some boots when it gets a little cooler.

Vacation Days

Hope you didn’t use up all your PTO days during the summer! Between sick kids and class parties I use up a massive amount of PTO time during the school year. I love that Hank’s school invites the parents to so many events but it is KILLER on my accruals.

Snacks, Snacks, Snacks

My kids’ snack game goes strong over the school year. Need to fuel all that brain power I guess. You’ll also probably want to stock up on flour and sugar. There will be 35864 class celebrations coming up and you will be asked to bring treats to all of them.

Organizer

This is a given. I’m a pen and paper gal so I NEED to operate out of an organizer. We also keep a calendar on the fridge with the family schedules.

Allocated Email Address

I can’t take the credit for this one. I was reading Narci’s Grace and Love blog the other day and she talked about having an email address set up ONLY for teachers and coaches. That way you will never miss a class/team email amongst the 45 Groupon emails you get everyday.

Adjusted Sleep Schedules

Even though school doesn’t start until September we are trying to start adjusted our sleep schedules now. My kids don’t take well to abrupt change so I am slowly pushing up bedtimes. I think the adjustment will be easier once it gets darker a little earlier.

The Basics

We always start the school year stocked up on fresh undershirts, underwear and socks. I don’t know what happens to these things throughout the school year but I feel like we always have a need for more of the basics.

Tissues & Meds

I’m counting this as my number 9 & 10. School season is germ season. I like to have tissues, Tylenol, and decongestant on hand at the house so I don’t have to lug cranky kids to the drug store when they inevitably get a cold. Has anyone ever tried those lollipops for sore throats? I’m thinking of throwing them in my Amazon cart.

We still have 3 weeks until Meet the Teacher night and 4 weeks until school officially begins. There is still plenty of summer fun to be had and we plan on making the most of it.

His little backpack is so cute, and I love the calendar you got for the fridge. These are all good back to school ideas. You all have quite a bit of summer still left. My kids go back next week!

I have never bought PB backpacks, I’ve always bought Lands End which we’ve loved! Now that my girls are older, I have so much more vacation time!!

What a great list. I had never thought about the dedicated email but that is a good idea. I just went and unsubscribed to 5000 store subscriptions – so many! Yes I was just saying my kids feet grew so much this summer while we wearing flip flops and didn’t notice. Sigh…last year for my son in the younger boy shoes, then we go to the next more expensive level, wahhhh! We are getting an Under Armour Outlet this fall at our brand new outlet mall and I can’t wait. It might be dangerous that it’s 10 minutes from my house ;). Thanks for linking up 🙂 xoxo ERIN

That idea of a solo email just for school is so smart! Love it!
